In 1982, the company’s principals founded what grew to be the nation’s largest consumer-driven physician information services company (1-800-DOCTORS). It revolutionized the industry. Consumers wishing to find a doctor would call 800-DOCTORS, and be connected to trained counselors at the company’s automated call center in Boulder, CO. The counselors then accessed the proprietary database (the database included the equivalent of 28 pages of information on each doctor in each practice) that guided them through a sophisticated proprietary access process refined over years to rapidly provide relevant information that resulted in an appointment with a doctor appropriate for them. Sophisticated feedback mechanisms were put in place. Feedback was obtained from nearly every patient about the practice, treatment style, etc. that would be communicated to the practitioners which resulted in improved satisfaction of patients. Demographic and psychographic profiling of both consumer and practitioner led to a matching process that resulted in a 96% patient retention rate (vs. 35% national average) for participating physicians, and provided a steady stream of new patients to client practices that were appropriate for the practice. Data collected proved the efficacy of the program for hospitals. Management contracted with individual hospitals and hospital chains, including Humana and HCA, the nation’s largest hospital company, which paved the way to national expansion. The overwhelming success of 1-800-DOCTORS proved that its data providing services filled a critical need for mainstream medicine. The Company now believes that the control excercised by business interests in healthcare makes 4Healing a necessity.
